You’re a global citizen job hopping from continent to continent to gain that necessary international experience and build wealth. You don’t have any dependants or children yet, so why do you need a will?
‘Isn’t a will only for someone who has children?’, you might ask.
Let’s turn this around and ask you a few questions.
• Do you have any assets like property or investments? – Who will get these if you die?
• Would you rather be cremated than buried? – Who knows this?
• Are you religious? – Do you want a traditional religious funeral?
• You don’t have children, but what about siblings or parents? – wouldn’t you want them to get your assets?
• Will your partner be taken care of? If you are not married, then they might not get anything.
• Who will your life insurance policies pay out too?
• Who will get your accumulated pension fund?
•Who is going to manage your estate when you pass away? – Must your siblings or parents sit with the administrative mess?
• Does the country you live in have different laws about your estate on death?
• What about taxation on your assets? – Who will sort this out?
•Did you want to leave money to a charity? - Who knows this?
Without a will, there are no guarantees that any of the above will be carried out.
There could be fights over who gets what, or your assets could be given to other family members according to the laws of the country in which you are living.
Drawing up a will is the only guaranteed way to ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes and that you have a nominated executor who will take care of the legal and administrative matters.
